The Star Inn Cookhouse: Historic Talk and Tastings

March 24 @ 2:00 pm - 5:00 pm

$50

The Glengarry Pioneer Museum is bringing Holly Benison, a culinary historian, to the community hall in Dunvegan on March 24th for a historic talk with delicious tastings and an immersive 19th century tavern experience.

The log Star Inn at the Glengarry Pioneer Museum was a busy stagecoach stop in the 19th century, offering meals and simple accommodation for travelers. What would a typical meal have tasted like, and why were taverns important in Upper Canada? Ticket holders for this event will enjoy an 1860s style tavern meal, researched and prepared according to historical recipes from Ontario cookbooks; a series of mini talks about the history of the selected recipes and of Upper Canadian taverns; and an immersive atmosphere brought to life by local 19th century reenactment units.

The afternoon will be presented by Holly Benison of Ottawa who has thoroughly researched culinary history, women’s work and Canadian foodways in the 19th century. She will be joined by living history re-enactors to help serve and entertain – to bring this food and history to life in a fun and entertaining way.

Tickets must be purchased in advance at $50 per person and will include a historical drink, meat or vegetarian dish, and dessert. It will be an afternoon experience running from 2:00 until approximately 5:00 pm. There is limited space, so get your tickets today! Tickets can be purchased through the museum’s website: www.glengarrypioneermuseum.ca or by calling the museum: 613-527-5230.

The event will take place at the Dunvegan Recreation Association hall (DRA), just a stone’s throw away from the museum grounds. 19053 County Road 24, Dunvegan, ON. For more information, please visit the museum’s website: www.glengarrypioneermuseum.ca, or call 613-527-5230.
