TOP 5 things to do in SDG Counties this Family Day Weekend

  1. Start off the long weekend right with dinner out at one of our many local eateries. If the week has been a long one and the idea of going out gives you shivers – pick up your phone and order take out. We recommend trying the “Dragon’s Breath Pizza” at Iron Forge Pizza, in Winchester. The not-so-secret ingredient on this slice of happiness is Frank’s Red-Hot Sauce. It’s sure to warm you up on a chilly day. For those looking to venture out this weekend, the margaritas at Sol de Acapulco, in Ingleside are made from scratch. They pair well with the wide assortment of Mexican cuisine and are as decadent as the oysters on the menu at Sheepshead Bistro in South Glengarry. 2. Countryside Adventures is the spot to be this winter. The winding skating trails meander through beautiful forests that twinkle with fairy lights as the sun sets and dark falls on the trail. There are bonfires to warm you up and the beaver trails and hot cocoa will keep you zooming through the trails. For the foodies – try the S’Mores. They’re made of decadent brownie bites baked at “A Touch of Health”, in Moose Creek. https://www.countrysideadventures.ca/
  3. Take advantage of Ontario’s Family Fishing Event, from February 19-21, 2022 to cast your fishing line without the need for a fishing license. The Alexandria Ice Fishing Derby will be taking place at Island Park, in Alexandria on Saturday, February 19, starting at noon. Anglers will be casting their lines for a chance to win more than $50,000 in prizes. Warm weather is coming in for the 19th edition of this event which will leave you with some great fish stories to tell your children.   https://alexandriafishingderby.com/en/ You can also head to Hoople Creek, in Ingleside, which is renowned for being one of the largest natural pickerel fish hatcheries and fishing areas in Eastern Ontario. It’s a natural paradise second to none and it’s ready to greet you for a day of winter fun! If you want to do so with the added comfort of a heated ice hut, call Claude Collette at 613-330-5764 to inquire about rentals.
  4. There is nothing quite so intrinsically magical as a winter sleigh ride in the country. At Strathburn Farm, in Williamstown, visitors are welcomed by the nickering of champion horses, who spend their summers competing in local fairs and playing in the fields they call home. Sleigh rides need to be booked in advance by calling Andrew Sangster at t. 613-363-7599.
  5. The recent snowfall is a godsend to cross-country skiers looking to hit the trails this weekend. Summerstown Trails has more than 20 kilometres of groomed ski trails to keep you entertained and the conditions are expected to be exceptional! This beautiful forest destination features an additional 20 kilometres of snowshoeing trails and both mixed and shared fat biking trails.  It’s free to use the trails and cross-country ski equipment is available for daily rentals (fees apply). https://www.summerstowntrails.com/
